Reception Analysis as Individuals
What Reception Analysis is, is the idea that people all see media in different ways and have different views on others. Different people will look at certain media in more detail than others, reception analysis suggests that the audience themselves help to create the meaning of the media.
All people decode media that is seen in individual ways which may be a result of upbringing d the person is in, the location they are at and the current time, actually any combinations of these things all generate separate views on media.
For example, One person may watch a movie, and love it from start to finish where as a friend of that person, or in fact any other person could hate it from beginning to then end and then be glad when its over. This shows just how much people’s views are different and therefore is a perfect example of Reception Analysis.
Preferred/dominant reading.
The idea of preferred/dominant reading is what a lot of company’s do, in which they create an, for say, advert, and hope that all people who see the advert would all get the same reading for it. This is a very strict way of seeing the population as they would expect everyone to react the same, however in 9 out of 10 cases this does not happen.
Oppositional Reading.
This is more of a realistic look at the above example as in people would not take to the advert as the company would of expected. They may reject the advert for what was wanted to be seen and do the complete opposite of what the company wanted to achieve.
Negotiated Reading.
This would be the ‘3rd way ‘ of interpreting a media form which takes the idea of people not, rejecting what was wanted, but in fact changing the medias preferred reading into their own views on it and seeing it as they wanted to see it, and not how the company would of wanted.
How this Helps me.
Reception Analysis helps me in the production of my trailer as I plan to give a preferred/ dominant reading with my trailer but I do understand that People will have more and different views on my trailer, which is why I plan to try and give my trailer multiple preferred views so that everyone could have their own views on it and hopefully not have any negative thoughts on it and so that they wouldn’t reject it.
This will be rather difficult to portray in a Vigilante Film as in most films of the same type, the director would normally have you attached to the main character as his preferred/dominant reading. Where as I, I am going to try and create ‘attachment’ to more than one role in the film. Which is similar to having multiple preferred/dominant readings.
